Gastric Embolization

Obesity is characterized with highest increase in prevalence around the world. Even though there are tens of medical etiologies of obesity, the most important ones are abnormal weight gain and sedentary lifestyle. Life time of obese patients is approximately 15 years shorter than other people due to diseases caused by obesity, including but not limited to hypertension, type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia, ischemic heart disease etc. Obesity is a risk factor for cancers such as colorectal cancers, breast cancer and prostate cancer.

The only cure for the obesity that may lead to life threatening problems is to lose excess weight.

Gaining weight is fat deposition in the body as a result of taking more calories than used.

One of the most important factors that facilitates the calorie intake is appetite.  Appetite is regulated by the ghrelin hormone, produced in a part of the stomach, called fundus.

In the gastric embolization method that is currently at investigational phase, the left gastric artery that supplies blood to gastric fundus, where the ghrelin hormone is produced, is obstructed. It is demonstrated in various studies that obstruction of this artery suppresses production of ghrelin hormone.

It must be taken into account that this minimally invasive bariatric intervention is still at investigational phase.
